FH Hafnarfjörður have conceded a single goal in their last six league games — and one of those results was a 2–0 win over the reigning champions, Víkingur Reykjavík. For a side that spent most of the summer in the relegation fight, that's a turnaround few saw coming. FH don't score much, but they let almost nothing in, and it has been enough to lift them clear of the drop zone. Now Keflavík come to Kaplakriki: newcomers who have caught nearly everyone off guard and sit high in the table with the season winding down.

The market

No betting market is up this far out, so the read below is built on the football itself, not on a market line.

It's the defence that keeps FH afloat. Five clean sheets in their last six, one goal conceded, and in that run they beat both Víkingur and KA and drew 0–0 with Fram and Breiðablik. Jóhannes Karl Guðjónsson has built this team on discipline and shape rather than fluency — and the goalscoring has been a season-long problem, barely a goal a game on average, with eight draws in nineteen rounds telling their own story. But at the right point in the summer, that rock-solid defence has delivered the points that matter most in a relegation fight.

Keflavík are a different story. Promoted from the lower divisions, they were widely tipped to scrap at the bottom. Instead the side from Reykjanesbær have scored in bunches — 5–2 against ÍA, 3–2 against KR, 3–0 against KA — and climbed to fifth. The weakness has been on the road; it wasn't until mid-August, in a 2–0 win at Þór, that they finally won away for the first time in roughly 99 days. Eiður Orri Ragnarsson scored both goals that day and arrives in fine form.

The match turns on whether Keflavík can break down a defence that has conceded once in six. FH sit deep, shut off the space and invite you to find a way through — and in August, almost no one has. Against that comes an attack that can punish: Eiður Orri in scoring form, and Alpha Conteh, whose late goal sealed a win over KR earlier in the summer.

The key is the first goal. If Keflavík score first, FH are forced to open up, and that's where the trouble lies — because there simply isn't much attacking threat here, with Tómas Róbertsson and Gils Gíslason the top scorers on modest tallies. But if FH keep the clean sheet going and drag the match down into a low-scoring grind, the question becomes Keflavík's away form — which was a problem right up until a few weeks ago. That's the question that decides it.

THE PICK

ResultHome win
GoalsUnder 2.5
Both teams scoreNo

FH need the points more, they're at home, they've already beaten Keflavík once this summer, and they arrive with a defence that has given up next to nothing. When they do score, one goal is usually enough, and a low-scoring home win fits exactly the template that has carried them out of the bottom two.

The risk is Keflavík's attacking power. They score more than most sides in the league and have just shown the away curse is behind them with that win in Akureyri. If the ball hits the FH net early, their thin front line is poorly suited to chasing the game — and a team that has drawn eight times could just as easily leave points on the table. If Keflavík score first, the pick is in trouble.

This is also a meeting of two storied clubs heading in different directions: FH, multiple-time Icelandic champions, clawing their way off the relegation line under Jóhannes Karl Guðjónsson, against a Keflavík side back among the elite and running well ahead of expectations. Kick-off is at 17:00 on Sunday at Kaplakriki.
