The last time these two met, back in June, it was level at 2-2 by the break before KR pulled clear to win 5-3. Eight goals, both sides swinging, neither back line at home. Now they meet again in the final round of the regular season — with a place in the championship group still up for grabs for ÍA Akranes, while KR are already among the front-runners behind Víkingur Reykjavík, who have long since disappeared over the horizon at the top. Two of Iceland's most decorated clubs, in very different positions when the whistle goes.
The market
There's no reliable market read on this one yet. On form and league position KR would be the favourites, but that's a judgment from the table rather than anything the market has told us.
KR arrive unbeaten from their last five — three wins, two draws — and heavily involved at both ends. Nineteen goals scored, eight conceded, and not a single clean sheet across those games. They put five past both Fram, then third in the table, and ÍBV, but they also shipped three in a 3-3 draw with Breiðablik. Aron Sigurðarson, the left winger and one of the division's leading scorers, is the main threat going forward. After nineteen rounds KR sat second on 40 points.
ÍA have found their range at home — 5-1 against Stjarnan, a 3-1 win away at ÍBV — but the defence has been patchy against the stronger sides, and the five they conceded at Keflavík tell their own story. Lárus Sigurðsson's team sit fifth on 25 points, just two clear of seventh, and need points to lock in a top-six place.
Worth keeping in mind: those standings are after nineteen rounds, and both sides still have two matches to play before this one. The positions can shift.
LAST 5 MATCHES
This one comes down to whether ÍA's defence can handle KR's weight of attack. KR have scored in bunches all summer and hung five on both Fram and ÍBV, but they've given plenty away at the back too — no clean sheet in five and 42 conceded across the season. ÍA are double-edged themselves: good fun at home, but exposed when the game turns against them, as that 2-5 loss at Keflavík showed.
Aron Sigurðarson is the man ÍA have to keep quiet above all. Give him space down the left to run in behind and ÍA could spend the afternoon chasing shadows. Their answer lies in keeping the game open on their own terms — if they can push KR back with their own attack and keep the tempo high, they can drag them into exactly the kind of match neither side has managed to shut down: a shootout. The question is whether they have enough at the back to survive it.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
THE PICK
Both teams to score: Yes
KR bring the stronger and more prolific attack, the higher league position and a recent 5-3 win over these same opponents. Both sides have scored freely and conceded freely in recent weeks, so goals at both ends look likely — the pick is a KR away win, over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
The risk is the context of the final round. ÍA play at home with a top-six place on the line, while KR have their business more or less done and could turn up with less edge. If ÍA get in front early and control the tempo on their own pitch, points are far from out of the question — and if that happens, the result part of the pick falls apart, even if the goals line probably holds either way.
This is a meeting of two pillars of Icelandic football — KR Reykjavík, the record holders for domestic titles, and ÍA Akranes, whose own golden era of the 1990s sits behind them. That they meet in the final round with the league split on the line gives the game extra weight in Akranes. Aron Sigurðarson leads the KR attack, Lárus Sigurðsson manages the hosts, and kickoff is at 14:00.
