CompetitionBesta deild karla, Iceland's top flight — lower-half round
Date20 September 2026, 16:00 Iceland time
VenueHásteinsvöllur, Vestmannaeyjar

Both meetings between these sides this summer went to the home team, and neither was emphatic: Valur won 2-1 at Hlíðarendi in April, ÍBV answered with a 1-0 win at Hásteinsvöllur in July. Now Valur travel back to the Vestmannaeyjar — the Westman Islands off Iceland's south coast — to the same ground that beat them last time. This is the third meeting of the season, and this one falls in the lower-half round, where the bottom two go down. For ÍBV, rock bottom of the table, it's all about survival. For Valur, it's about not letting the drop creep any closer.

The market

``` No reliable market read for this fixture. The pick below is read from the game itself. ```
ÍBV finished the regular season bottom, 12th on 18 points with a goal difference of −13. That tells one story. The last two rounds tell another: a draw away to champions Víkingur Reykjavík, then another draw away at Stjarnan, a point taken in each. ÍBV have shown they can score early and defend — which is exactly how they saw off Valur in July.
Valur sit higher, 8th on 27 points, but it's been a turbulent season. Hermann Hreiðarsson was dismissed, assistant Chris Brazell is seeing out the campaign as head coach, and Halldór Árnason has been hired to take over next summer — a third managerial change in four years. At one stretch they won just one of seven, and by reports they also went out of European competition. But the closing run was better: a 3-1 win away at Breiðablik against ten men, then 2-1 at Keflavík, with Jónatan Ingi Jónsson and Dagur Orri Garðarsson on the scoresheet. So they arrive with some wind in the sails — and a reminder of how quickly things can turn.
The big question is a simple one: can Valur break down an ÍBV back line that kept them out at this same ground in July? Valur have found their goals out wide and late in games lately, but against a side happy to sit on a lead, that isn't always enough. ÍBV need only one goal and some discipline to repeat what they did in the summer.
And discipline is part of the subplot. Valur captain Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson scored the winner in the first meeting — then took a straight red in the second, on 65 minutes, and Valur lost the thread. In a relegation-tinged game on the island, where the heat in the stands will be real, keeping eleven men on the pitch is everything for Valur. Go down to ten again and the balance tilts hard — exactly as it did last time.
Both meetings this summer were settled by a single goal and neither went over 2.5, and here you have two sides with more reason to avoid defeat than to win big — the bottom club that can't afford to lose, and a Valur side that doesn't want to drag itself into the relegation fight. Home advantage has decided everything in this pairing, but the gap in quality on paper holds back a clean home pick. So the pick is a draw in a low-scoring game.
The risk is that the pattern simply holds — that home advantage wins out again, ÍBV grab an early lead and defend it, as in July. That beats the draw, though the under most likely still stands. And if Valur go down to ten again, this turns quickly in the hosts' favour.
The trip out to the islands is always part of the equation. The Herjólfur ferry and the wind at Hásteinsvöllur have repeatedly disrupted ÍBV's summer — Vestmannaeyjar is reached by boat or plane, both weather-dependent — and for a Reykjavík side this is no ordinary away day. In a relegation-tinged game late in September, with both teams carrying plenty to lose, that factor alone can make a tight match tighter still.
