Þór haven't put the ball in KA's net all summer. Two matches, 180 minutes, not a single goal — and yet they sit a place above their neighbours as the relegation group kicks off. This is the Akureyri derby, the only genuine two-club city derby outside the capital area, back in the top division now that Þór have climbed up. And it doubles as a straight relegation fight between the town's two clubs. A single point separates them. The bottom two go down. Few games this season carry more.

THE MARKET

1X2KA a clear favourite, Þór a firm outsider
Over/under 2.5Unclear, but the signs point to few goals
BTTSNo looks the likelier side

Both sides arrive on an upswing, which is rare in this scrap. KA edged Breiðablik 2-1 at home in the final round before the split, a late winner deciding it, while Þór beat FH 1-0 the same weekend — a deserved win over another side in the drop fight. Vital points for both, but they don't change the underlying picture: this is a meeting of two of the division's leakiest defences. KA have conceded 48 in 22 matches and have a habit of unravelling once they fall behind, as the 0-3 loss at Keflavík showed. Þór have shipped 50, most of them away from home, but they're tighter at Greifavöllurinn — every result of note has come on their own patch.

For KA, the big change is on the touchline. Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen — Iceland's most decorated modern footballer — joined the coaching staff in late August and now runs the side alongside Hallgrímur Jónasson. His first match ended in a 5-3 defeat at KR, but the home win over Breiðablik followed. Þór, meanwhile, lost forward Ingimar Arnar Kristjánsson to Danish club Århus Fremad in late July and are left with the lowest goal tally in the league — just 22. That's the heart of the problem for a team that struggles to score at all, let alone against neighbours it hasn't managed to break down this summer.

The key question is simple: can Þór finally score against KA? For that, Ágúst Eðvald Hlynsson needs to find space. He's Þór's top scorer, netted against both Víkingur and KR, and is more or less the only reliable attacking threat in a side that generates little from sustained pressure. Þór's best routes forward are set pieces and quick breaks — and it's worth remembering that goalkeeper Aron Birkir Stefánsson scored himself from inside his own half against KR this summer. Standing in the way is a back line that concedes in clusters yet has still kept Þór scoreless across two meetings.

At the other end, it's about whether KA can turn their home advantage into goals before the nerves take hold. Hallgrímur Már Steingrímsson is their leading scorer and the team can strike in bursts. But the pattern says that once KA concede first, chaos usually isn't far behind. If Eiður Smári keeps them calm and lets Þór do the chasing, KA should control the evening. If the first goal goes Þór's way, though, it could turn into a long night.

THE PICK

1X2Home win
GoalsUnder 2.5
BTTSNo

KA have kept Þór scoreless for 180 minutes this summer, sit as the market's favourite, and finally play at home with no travel involved. Þór are the lowest scorers in the league and lean on isolated moments rather than sustained attacking play — and the two previous meetings produced one goal between them. So the call is a narrow home win with few goals.

The risk comes in two forms. KA's defence is fragile enough that Þór could steal a goal from a set piece or a break, and then the head-to-head run is snapped and the game opens up. And if that first goal does fall Þór's way, KA's tendency to lose the thread is well established — a match everyone expected to be tight could turn into a shootout that neither the home win nor the under survives.

It isn't every day that a proper city derby is played in Akureyri in the top flight. Þór returned to the division this year after a long absence, and with them the local derby has finally come home to the top tier. On top of that, Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen takes charge of his first Akureyri derby with KA's survival on the line. Few games this season feel this rooted in one place.
