CompetitionBesta deild karla, Iceland's top flight — matchday 22
DateSunday 6 September, 14:00 Iceland time (GMT)
VenueNettóvöllurinn, Reykjanesbær

The last three league meetings between Keflavík and Valur finished 1-1, 1-1 and 0-0 — the most recent of them this summer, at Valur's Hlíðarendi ground in June. It takes something out of the ordinary to force a result between these two, and as Valur make the short trip south to Reykjanesbær on the final matchday, it's two sides that have made a habit of splitting the points. Keflavík come in on three clean sheets in a row; Valur trail an open, leaky season behind them. On paper, two very different stories — but the head-to-head keeps telling the same one.

The market

No prices were readable when this was written, so the pick below is a read on the game itself.

Keflavík have found something at the back. Clean sheets against KA, Þór and ÍBV in their last three, and they look solid at home. The away trips are a different matter — in among those shutouts they were beaten 1-5 by Víkingur. At home they're another team entirely, and home is where they are now. A promoted side, back in the top flight after two years away, they sit sixth and have met expectations comfortably.

Valur are a harder case. The side that finished second last year now sits seventh after a campaign that never came together. The defence leaks — they've conceded in four of their last five league games, including a 4-4 draw with KA, and they went out of Conference League qualifying 0-7 on aggregate to Nordsjælland. There was a mid-season change in the dugout, too: the Englishman Christopher Brazell took over from Hermann Hreiðarsson. Going forward Valur still have teeth — they've scored in every recent league game — but the balance is missing. Neither side is in any real relegation danger, and neither is playing for a European place. This is about mid-table position and pride.

Both teams to score: more often than not

The question that decides this game is simple: does Keflavík's new-found home solidity hold, or does Valur break it open? Keflavík haven't conceded in three matches and lean on Stefan Ljubicic, their top scorer with eight goals, to punish at the other end. Valur arrive with Tryggvi Haraldsson — also on eight for the season — leading an attack that has found the net in every one of its recent league outings.

It comes down to whether Keflavík can keep the game tight. Close the spaces, force Valur to work through a packed defence, and the pattern bends toward few chances and few goals — exactly like the last few meetings. But let Valur stretch it, get the game flowing end to end, where they've both scored and conceded in bunches, and the home defence is in unfamiliar territory. The back line that shut out Þór is not the one that shipped five in Víkin.

THE PICK

ResultDraw
GoalsUnder 2.5

The head-to-head is too emphatic to look past: the last three league meetings all ended in low-scoring draws, and Keflavík turn up with a defence that hasn't let anything through in three matches. When two sides sitting side by side in mid-table meet with this history between them, a draw under 2.5 goals is the natural outcome.

The risk is Valur. Under their new manager they've played open football and scored in every game — that 4-4 with KA is proof this one can get away from everyone. If it starts flowing end to end, both the draw and the under fall apart. Worth remembering, too, that both sides have fixtures before this one and the picture can shift — it pays to read the teams again closer to kickoff.

For Valur this is the last act of a disappointing season, a chance to close out the summer without further damage after the European exit. For Keflavík it's the final home game of their first season back among the best — and no reason to give up the solidity they've built at Nettóvöllurinn. Kickoff is 14:00 on Sunday.
