The last time Türkiye played at a World Cup, they produced the best run in their history. That was the summer of 2002 — before either Arda Güler or Kenan Yıldız was born. Now, 24 years on, a new generation has arrived on the biggest stage, and the start hasn't gone to plan. Türkiye lost their opener to Australia despite controlling the game, and now they have to play their way out of the group away from home, against the hosts. This could be their last match of the tournament, or the one that keeps the adventure alive.

The USA opened strongly, beating Paraguay 4-1 at this same stadium, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice. There's a shadow over the win, though: Christian Pulisic came off at half-time after a kick to the calf, and by reports his status has been assessed day to day. If he's missing, the hosts lose their key man — and with him the sharpest weapon in their transition game.

Türkiye come in from a very different place. Montella's side had won seven of their last eight before the tournament, including friendly wins over North Macedonia and Venezuela by reports, but the defeat to Australia exposed the weakness: they kept the ball, had more of the play and took more shots, yet were open on the counter and conceded twice from quick breaks. Güler and Yıldız are the quality up front, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu runs the play from a deeper role, but the question is whether Türkiye can break down a defence that commits to closing the space. That's exactly the trap Australia set for them. The USA lined up with a back five in their opener and look content to sit deep and punish on the break.

Earlier matches not confirmed reliably

This game comes down to one thing: Türkiye's possession against the USA's structure. Güler wants the ball between the lines and Yıldız looks for the space behind the defenders; if Türkiye can keep the ball high up the pitch and draw the hosts out, the route opens up. The USA intend the opposite — to pack the midfield, win the ball and go straight forward the moment they have it. That's the key. Türkiye will most likely have to chase the win, which tempts them to push their defenders higher, and that's precisely when Balogun and company are most dangerous, in open space with the goal at their mercy. The question the match will answer is simple: can Türkiye break down a compact block, or do the USA do what Australia did and punish them in transition? If Pulisic is fit, the American counter gets an even sharper edge; if he's out, the going gets harder up front and Türkiye's edge on the ball weighs heavier.

The pick

ResultUSA win
GoalsOver 2.5

Both teams to score: Yes

The hosts have the home ground, the crowd and an opening win in the bank, and their style fits neatly into what Türkiye have no answer for. Türkiye have to attack, which opens space for the American break, just as it did against Australia — and when both sides need to score, the signs point to goals. The market hasn't set lines for the goal total or both-teams-to-score in this match, so this is our read rather than a priced line.

The risk is twofold. Pulisic's absence would blunt the attack up front and make it harder for the USA to punish on the break. And if Türkiye finally use the quality of Güler and Yıldız to break the defence down, this could just as easily end as a tight, low-scoring win for them. This is a coin-flip on paper, and the pick leans to the hosts rather than claiming anything as settled.

From an Iceland angle

There's no Icelandic connection to this one, but anyone who wants to follow it will have to stay up. RÚV holds the World Cup rights here at home — on television and on ruv.is — and kickoff is 02:00 Iceland time. A night shift for those who fancy it. But a final group game, with a place in the knockout rounds on the line, is usually worth it.
