The USA pressed Paraguay into the ground in their opener. Folarin Balogun scored twice in the first half — the first American to score twice in a single World Cup match since 1930 — and Gio Reyna added a late third. But the rout deserves some context. The build-up under Mauricio Pochettino was patchy, with defeats to Belgium (5-2) and Portugal (2-0) before the tide turned.
