The United States and Australia have met four times, and every one of them was a friendly. Tonight that changes. Both sides sit on three points after comfortable openers — the hosts rolled over Paraguay 4-1, Australia stunned Türkiye 2-0 — and the winner takes top spot in Group D and the kinder route into the knockouts. This is the first competitive meeting between the two nations, and it's about a good deal more than three points.

The USA pressed Paraguay into the ground in their opener. Folarin Balogun scored twice in the first half — the first American to score twice in a single World Cup match since 1930 — and Gio Reyna added a late third. But the rout deserves some context. The build-up under Mauricio Pochettino was patchy, with defeats to Belgium (5-2) and Portugal (2-0) before the tide turned. The big question for tonight is Christian Pulisic, who limped off against Paraguay. Reports suggest he'll be available, but the sources don't all agree — one still had him training alone with his status unclear.

Australia come at this from the opposite direction. The win over Türkiye was built on discipline, a compact defence and a fine night from goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who made eight saves. They do little with the ball but are dangerous on the break, and at the back stands Harry Souttar — close to two metres tall and finally back after an Achilles injury that kept him out for nearly 500 days. Mohamed Toure went off with cramp against Türkiye but is reported fit to feature.

The match turns on a clean contrast in style. On one side, the American high press and the numbers they throw forward. On the other, Australia's back five, built to defend deep and punish on the counter. The question is whether the hosts can break down a packed defence without leaving themselves open to those fast breaks the other way.

That is exactly where Australia live. Against Türkiye they scored from two of their handful of chances and let Beach handle the rest. Souttar towers over the box at set pieces and gives away little in the air, and in front of him sits a closed system that offers Balogun little room to work. The key for the USA is Pulisic. Fit and sharp, he tilts the balance their way — he's the one who unpicks locked defences. Without him the attack becomes more predictable, and that suits Australia's plan even better.

THE PICK

The USA are the better side, with more quality going forward and home advantage at their own tournament, and they should have enough to force the win. But the opponent is precisely the kind to take the air out of a goal feast: Australia defend deep, score sparingly, and kept a clean sheet against Türkiye behind those eight Beach saves. Everything points to a tight, low-key game in which the hosts edge ahead by a goal or two.

The risk is twofold. First, Pulisic — if his absence is confirmed, the attack loses the one man most likely to crack the wall, and the game can finish goalless or drawn. Then there's Souttar and the set pieces: if Australia steal a goal on the counter or from a dead ball, the Under 2.5 and the "No" on both teams to score come undone in an instant.
