CompetitionBesta deild karla 2026, opening round of the relegation split
Date13 September, 16:00 Iceland time

Þór have already won at Hlíðarendi this summer. The side from Akureyri, in the north, came south earlier in the season and went home with a 1–2 win, and now they return to the same ground — for the first round of the relegation split, with their place in Iceland's top flight on the line. Valur sit six points above them and are all but safe, but it has been a restless year at Hlíðarendi and the defence has leaked. These are opposite teams: Valur score and concede in bunches; Þór score little but have hardened at the right moment.

Valur go into the relegation round with just one league win in their last four, and among the rest are a 4–4 with KA and a 0–5 defeat at Nordsjælland in European qualifying. They score — eight goals in their last four league matches — but they concede regularly too, and it has been a while since they kept a clean sheet. By reported accounts, Chris Brazell took over as interim manager after Hermann Hreiðarsson was let go in the summer, and the club has been through plenty. Still, a six-point cushion over the drop zone is comfortable enough with five rounds to play.

Þór arrive with a very different story. After three straight defeats, the Akureyri side have won their last two, both 1–0 and both without conceding — most recently against FH, who had lost only once since May. Aron Birkir Stefánsson, goalkeeper and captain, has been at the centre of that defensive turnaround. The side sit just one point above the relegation places and know exactly what is at stake. Against that is the longest away day in the league, nearly 400 kilometres south, and by reported accounts "Oliver" was an unexpected absentee from the squad last weekend.

This one is likely to be decided in Þór's box. Patrick Pedersen is Valur's focal point up front, the man everything runs through in attack, and his task is to break down a defence that has suddenly found its rhythm. Aron Birkir and company have kept two clean sheets in a row by packing in tight and denying the opposition space — exactly the puzzle Valur have to solve.

The question is whether Valur can wear that defence down over 90 minutes. Þór won here earlier in the summer by stealing a low-scoring goal and then defending hard, and the same recipe is on the table again. But Valur create more, they play at home, and they have more depth in attack. If Pedersen can drag defenders out of shape and open space for Samúel Kári Friðjónsson and the rest in midfield, it will be hard for Þór to keep a third straight clean sheet. If instead Akureyri hold their form and score first, the match turns into the patient grind that suits them better.

THE PICK

ResultHome win
GoalsOver 2.5

Both teams to score: Yes

Market lines aren't available this far out, so this is a read on the match rather than a read on the market. Valur score too much and play too openly for anything other than a home win, and both meetings this year went over 2.5 with goals at each end. More depth up front and home advantage should tell against a side that has only just found defensive solidity but scores little.

The risk comes in two parts. Þór have already won at this ground this summer, and they came south with precisely this plan — defend, steal a goal, hold. If Akureyri score first and shut the game down, as they did against ÍBV and FH, this could become the same low-scoring 1–0 that has carried them out of the drop fight. That would upend the goals call and the result call in one stroke.

For Þór, this is no ordinary away trip. A promoted club from the north, back in the top flight after a long absence, playing for their league survival with five rounds left — and doing it on a ground where they have already shown they can win. For Valur, the day is about wrapping up safety and closing out a turbulent year with a little stability.
